"I believe Wendell’s story will encourage and inspire every reader to understand just how good and faithful God is, particularly to those who are looking for a deeper understanding of Him and His purpose for their lives" -From the Foreword by JOEL OSTEEN .... In the fall of 1973 a young Hollywood actor leaves behind his career and celebrity, embarking on a spiritual quest to the exotic, beautiful and seductive land of India, journal in hand. The trip is a culmination of three years of intense self-examination and spiritual exploration that has taken him through a maze of religions and new age sects. His goal is simple. He seeks what the Hindus call “Anubhava” or “truth, directly experienced." He travels the sub-continent from one end to the other with his mentor and another dozen or so fellow seekers, encountering along the way many famous and not-so-famous mystics, swamis, and gurus. And, oddly enough, he frequently runs into Christians who witness to him about Jesus. Although unappreciative of their intrusions, he is nevertheless reminded of his childhood faith and begins reading a Gideon Bible to find out more about Jesus. His original quest, a direct experience of God’s truth, becomes fulfilled in an unexpected and beautifully simple way that is sure to inspire every seeker who reads his story.

A raw and honest account of one man's journey to faith, Wendell Burton's engaging book had me hooked from the first page. I smiled and nodded as I read Burton's adventures; his questions, his search for Truth, were very similar to my own (with the huge exception that I wanted to travel to these places and he actually did). I felt a kinship from the start, and wanted to see how it all played out. His descriptions of exotic places and quirky characters was fun and interesting to read. Written in a casual style, it seemed less like reading a book and more like sitting in a cafe with that one friend who always has the most wonderful stories to share. I can even see myself re-reading this in the future. I highly recommend this book to people of all faiths or no faith. Great readProduct details

Godsmacked A Souljourner Guide to the Heart of God Wendell Burton 9781624821455 Books Reviews
Gives us an idea sinking to the level of despair, and through a good faith watching God bring the trials to a heavenly ending.
Engaging, superbly written and enlightening. An entertaining adventure that takes the reader on a magical ride. One of the best books I've read in a long time!
It was an interesting biography telling of how Burton encountered Jesus Christ. The majority of the book gave a lot of detail about his journey through the New Age and Hindu religions, which was eye opening. Overall a good read.
If you have ever wanted to go on a spiritual journey to India ,this true story will do it for you. I give it a 5 star .
This wonderfully honest and beautifully written memoir kept me looking forward to my bedtime reading right through, and I was sorry when it ended, although in a sense it doesn't end. I loved the sense of humour and related so much to the desperate and sincere rabbit-trail search for truth. There is absolutely no doubt that our God 'bends over backwards' to reveal Himself to the real seekers, regardless of how weird and misguided their efforts may be. It just makes me love Him all the more, and reminds me not to ever consider anyone beyond redemption. I was particularly impressed with the freshness in the way Wendell was able to portray the young man he was, even though this book is written quite a while later. He clearly is still the same creative, guitar playing, free spirit, the big difference being that he now knows the true meaning of free.
Godsmacked is full of the colors, sights, and sounds of India as Wendell Burton, an up and coming Hollywood actor-hippie, treks from mountaintops to valleys in search of the Truth. Taken from his journal, every village, every guru, and nearly every moment is recalled as he opens up his deepest fears and longings without shame. It's a mesmerizing journey that has you pulling for him to find the one truth that has been eluding him.
As an added bonus, sprinkled throughout are individuals whose names many will recognize from the early days of the Jesus movement.
Regardless of your knowledge of the this period of history, Godsmacked is an engaging trip in many ways.
I have been blessed to claim Wendell Burton as a dear friend and cherished brother in Christ since 1981. His profound faith in Jesus is as clear on these pages as it is on his musical recordings and in his daily walk. Reading this outstanding book, I got to know and appreciate Wendell's inspiring faith story on an even deeper level -- and I am richer in my own faith walk as a result!
